Toxic Self Talk

The way you talk about yourself matters. Whether it be verbally or mentally, negativity is destructive for your self esteem.

Look at a picture of yourself as a kid. Would you ever tell that innocent little girl that she's ugly and fat? Would you tell that sweet little boy that he's not good enough and will never amount to anything in life? No, you wouldn't. So why do you say these things to yourself now?

The way we talk about ourselves is significant because it can lead to healthy confidence or a never-ending spiral of insecurities. Sometimes, we are our own biggest critic. You would likely never dare to insult someone else for no valid reason, yet it can be so easy to put ourselves down constantly. Treat yourself as someone you love. Would you ever tell a loved one that you hate how they look? Absolutely not.

Treat yourself as that little kid you used to be. She or he is still inside you. She deserves positive self talk. He deserves positive self talk. Look at yourself in the mirror... You deserve positive self talk.

Do you ever talk about yourself badly? Do you ever think degrading thoughts about yourself?

Affirmations play a great role in building confidence. Repeating positive phrases about yourself helps. The beautiful thing about it is that you will eventually believe it.

Another strategy is to be aware of when negative self talk pops up. Mindfulness is key. Hold those thoughts captive. Challenge them. Then, replace the negative thought with a positive thought.

Remember the following...

You are beautiful.
You are intelligent.
You are strong.
You are worthy.
You deserve good things.
Above all, you are made in God's image.

For my people who struggle with negative self talk, remember that you have the ability to change the way you think about yourself. I pray that one day you will see yourself as others do. You have so much worth. You look great, and you are great. Never forget it.

I'm taking my own advice... I was beautiful, and I still am. :)
